Graphene-Powered Soft Lens Could Enable Smarter Glasses and Cameras

Researchers at Queen Mary University of London have developed a soft, transparent lens that can change focus electronically using graphene-based electrodes. Unlike conventional autofocus systems that rely on motors and moving parts, the new lens changes shape when a small electric field is applied. The team used reduced graphene oxide to create transparent electrodes that can be integrated directly into the soft lens, overcoming a major limitation of previous electrically controlled lenses whose opaque electrodes could block light. The prototype successfully adjusted its focal distance while maintaining a compact design. Although the technology is still in the research stage, it could eventually support autofocus cameras, wearable displays, augmented and virtual reality headsets, and miniature medical imaging devices, offering thinner and simpler alternatives to traditional mechanical focusing systems.
