Ghost Marsupial Related to Kangaroos Discovered in Australia

16 December 2025

Scientists studying fossil remains from caves in Western Australia have identified a previously unknown bettong species, along with two newly recognized woylie subspecies. The discoveries suggest that some of these marsupials may have already vanished before being scientifically described. Fossil evidence also revealed greater diversity within today’s critically endangered woylie populations. The findings offer valuable guidance for conservation, breeding, and relocation programs aimed at protecting these unique animals.
