Study Finds Heavy Chili Pepper Consumption Linked to Esophageal Cancer Risk

23 July 2026

A large review of 14 observational studies suggests that people who consume the highest amounts of chili peppers may face a greater risk of esophageal cancer, though the evidence remains inconclusive for stomach and colorectal cancers.Researchers analyzed data from more than 11,000 participants and found that heavy chili pepper consumers were significantly more likely to develop esophageal cancer. However, they stress that the findings show an association rather than proof that chili peppers directly cause cancer. The researchers say additional long-term studies are needed to determine whether moderate chili pepper consumption carries similar risks and to better understand the role of other lifestyle and dietary factors.
