Waste-Based Geopolymer Mortar Offers a Greener, Fire-Resistant Alternative to Concrete

Researchers at Kaunas University of Technology have developed a waste-based geopolymer mortar that could provide a more sustainable and fire-resistant alternative to conventional concrete. Made entirely from ceramic brick waste and industrial metakaolin waste, the material eliminates the need for Portland cement, whose production is responsible for approximately 7–8% of global CO₂ emissions. Tests showed that the geopolymer mortar retained high strength after exposure to temperatures of 800°C, significantly outperforming conventional concrete, which typically suffers severe damage under similar conditions. The material is designed for use in high-temperature environments such as tunnels, chimneys, furnaces, boilers, and industrial facilities. Researchers also found that the new material can become even stronger after repeated heat exposure. While the technology shows strong potential for sustainable construction, wider adoption will depend on the development of industry standards, regulatory support, and further real-world testing.
