Almost Every Forest Bird in Hawaiʻi Spreads Malaria

Nearly all Hawaiian forest birds can transmit avian malaria, keeping the disease active across the islands. Both native and introduced birds infect mosquitoes, even with low parasite levels, and chronic infections allow transmission for months or years. Rising temperatures are pushing malaria into higher-elevation refuges.
