Dual-light 3D printing unlocks nature-inspired blend of strength and flexibility

30 June 2025

Researchers at The University of Texas at Austin have developed a precise dual-light 3D printing method that seamlessly combines soft and rigid materials within a single object, mimicking how nature merges cartilage and bone. Using a custom resin and two colors of light, the technique prints flexible, rubber-like parts alongside tough, plastic-like zones that bond strongly at the interface. The breakthrough enables complex structures such as artificial joints, stretchable electronics, and advanced prosthetics that move naturally with the body. The team demonstrated the method by printing a working knee joint and flexible circuits, paving the way for next-generation medical and wearable devices.
