Miniaturized Organic Spectrometer Enables Broad-Spectrum Light Detection

30 July 2025

Researchers at NC State have developed a miniature spectrometer just a few millimeters in size that accurately measures light from UV to near-infrared. The device uses a voltage-tunable organic photodetector to capture spectral data without bulky optics or high power. By applying small voltages (under 1V), the sensor adjusts its sensitivity and reconstructs full light spectra in under a millisecond. This innovation, published in Device, opens the door to integrating spectrometers into smartphones and portable diagnostic tools.
