Plants Absorb Less CO₂ Than Climate Models Expected

5 January 2026

New research shows that plants cannot take in as much carbon dioxide as climate models once predicted because usable nitrogen is more limited than assumed. Scientists found that natural nitrogen fixation has been overestimated by around 50%, reducing plants’ ability to grow under high CO₂. As a result, the climate-cooling effect of vegetation is weaker than expected. This finding increases uncertainty in future climate projections and reduces Earth’s natural buffer against warming.
