World’s first whole-eye transplant: the innovations that made it possible

15 September 2024

A groundbreaking surgery has been performed, resulting in the first successful whole-eye transplant in history. The procedure involved transplanting a donor’s entire left eye, including the bony socket, nose, chin bone, and associated muscles, nerves, and blood vessels, into a patient who had lost his left eye in an accident. While the transplanted eye is healthy and responds to light, the patient cannot see out of it. This surgery represents a significant step towards the possibility of eye transplants that could restore vision.
