New Hydrogen Turbine Generates Electricity Without a Mechanical Compressor

Researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) have successfully generated electricity using a hydrogen-powered gas turbine that operates without a mechanical compressor. Instead, the system creates its own pressure through controlled detonation waves, a breakthrough that could significantly improve the efficiency of future clean energy systems. The team also achieved a record 303 seconds of continuous operation—surpassing NASA’s previous record of 250 seconds. Unlike conventional gas turbines, which use up to half of their power compressing air before combustion, the new design generates pressure directly inside the combustion chamber, reducing energy losses and simplifying the turbine’s design. Hydrogen is particularly well suited to this technology because of its fast reaction speed and ability to sustain stable pressure-gain combustion. Researchers believe the innovation could pave the way for lighter, more efficient turbines for renewable electricity generation and, in the future, hydrogen-powered aviation. Although still at the experimental stage, the achievement marks an important step toward cleaner, high-efficiency energy technologies.
