Researchers from Michigan State University and the Czech Academy of Sciences have uncovered how two highly poisonous plants—wolfsbane and larkspur—produce complex natural compounds with promising medical potential. By identifying six key enzymes involved in the formation of a molecule called atisinium, the team successfully recreated part of the process in engineered tobacco plants. The breakthrough provides a sustainable way to produce and study these rare plant compounds, which have shown potential for applications in pain management, cancer treatment, antimalarial therapies, and environmentally friendly pest control. Producing them in larger quantities could accelerate drug discovery and reduce reliance on harvesting toxic plants. Researchers believe this achievement marks an important step toward using plant-inspired chemistry to develop safer and more sustainable medicines, while continuing to explore the full therapeutic potential of these complex natural molecules.
