A new review suggests that creatine, a supplement commonly used to improve muscle performance, may also have potential as a treatment for depression by supporting the brain’s energy production. Researchers analyzed five randomized clinical trials involving 238 participants. Two studies found that adding creatine to standard depression treatment improved symptoms, while the remaining three reported no significant benefit. Although creatine was generally well tolerated, the evidence remains limited and inconsistent. Researchers emphasize that larger clinical trials are needed before creatine can be recommended as a treatment for depression.
